OBS Studio Bitrate & Encoder Calculator: Eliminate Dropped Frames
Calculate exact safe video bitrates, keyframe intervals, and hardware encoder presets for Twitch, YouTube Live, Kick, and TikTok.
1. The 30% Headroom Rule: Why Raw Upload Speeds Crash Live Streams
If your internet speed test shows an upload speed of 10 Mbps, entering 10,000 kbps into OBS Studio will immediately cause dropped network frames and stream stuttering. Live RTMP/SRT streaming is unbuffered real-time transmission. Your connection must simultaneously carry:
- 160 kbps high-definition stereo audio
- TCP ACK return packets for game downloads and web pages
- Real-time online gaming UDP traffic (Valorant, CS2, Apex Legends)
- Discord voice transmission and background synchronization
You must never allocate more than 70% to 75% of your measured upload speed to OBS video. A 25% to 30% safety reserve is required to absorb ISP jitter.
2. Why CBR (Constant Bitrate) is Mandatory for Live Streaming
Unlike local video recording where Variable Bitrate (VBR) saves space, live streaming platforms require CBR (Constant Bitrate). With VBR, rapid movement or explosion scenes cause instantaneous bitrate spikes that overflow your home router's upstream queue, dropping frames instantly.
3. Recommended Encoder Presets
- Nvidia NVENC (RTX 20/30/40 Series): Use Preset P6 (High Quality), Tuning: High Quality, Multipass: Two Passes (Quarter Resolution), Keyframe: 2s, B-Frames: 2.
- AV1 Encoder: 40% higher compression efficiency than H.264, enabling crisp 1440p streaming at 1080p bitrates.
- CPU x264: Set Rate Control to CBR, Preset to Faster or Medium, Profile to High.
